I think sewing should totally be way more normalised. When I wear something I made I am very proud but also a bit weary. People can think it is kind of weird to sew clothes, especially when they are a bit different/alternative/look 'home-made'... I think that keeps people away from sewing because of perfectionism and shame, when sewing can also be very useful! A few days ago i got a newletter from a piercing shop. In it they showed off a 'piercing cushion'. It was basically a donut-shaped cushion that you can lay on with your ear/nose/bellybutton/... on the hole so no pressure is applied to piercings. Now I have actually been having a little bit of trouble with sleeping on my conch piercing, so I thought the idea was very useful. Then i thought "this is just fabric circles sewn to each other and stuffed, I can do that." And I was true, I could. I made myself a nifty cushion, from scrap fabrics, so it was completely free!
Even if someone isn't the most experienced sewist, being able to shorten a pair of pants, to fix up a small hole, to make a small part of a costume,... Those are valuable skills and they can improve your life!
Now I do also really like sewing as a creative outlet so I don't only enjoy the practical side. I am also a very chaotic and let's say 'creative' sewist. I rarely use patterns, there are a lott of techniques I cannot do very well or not at all, I dont really buy fabric. I got a secondhand sewing machine from my aunt, a bunch of deadstock fabric from my grandfather's company, a lot of old clothes from people and a dream, really. I like experimenting and challenging myself. I basically sew with the fabrics I already have and choose projects based on that. I have a goal to use up all of my fabric, but that will take me al long time. Especially because I keep all the little scraps and want to use them up to. I have made patchwork clothes, plushes and bags in an attempt to never have to throw fabric away. (See also; my sustainability shrine once I make that one ;))
Right now the projects I am working on (or will be working on very soon) are; lining a blazer I have, a ringer tee with appliqués and a baseball cap? maybe?
